A Word about Outdoor Weddings and Events

I am frequently asked to play for outdoor weddings and events. It is probably the most common request I receive. There are a few things to keep in mind with regard to outdoor occasions on the Oregon Coast, and also a few things to keep in mind specifically regarding using a harp outdoors.

• Plan for rain. Even though you try to anticipate sunshine, weather on the coast is
  unpredictible even in the middle of summer. Rain is always a possibility. It is wise
  to have a backup plan or location in the event the weather decides not to cooperate.
• The wind. The wind is pretty much a given on the coast. It can be strong enough
  to make an outdoor event uncomfortable and even impossible. In the case of the
  harp, the wind will make the harp strings sound all on their own. Even a light breeze
  can cause the strings to sound. This can get in the way of the music. The wind can
  also cause problems with the music stand and music sheets. The earlier in the day your
  event takes place, the less wind you are likely to encounter, especially in the
  summer. The wind also dies down just about sunset.
• Beach access. One of the reasons the coast is popular for weddings is because
  couples want to hold their ceremony on the beach. I have been known to take
  my harp onto the beach (there are some harpists out there reading this who are
  probably cringing), but only if there is adequate, easy access which does not
  require carrying the harp a long distance. Do keep in mind, however, that the
  closer you are to the beach, the more the sound of the surf may interfere with
  guests being able to hear and enjoy the ceremony.
